Off-leash dog areas in the works

Off-leash dog beaches may be on the horizon for Pittwater, with Northern Beaches Council investigating Palm Beach North and Mona Vale Beach South as possible locations.

Council will perform environmental and feasibility assessments and conduct community engagement on the two possible beach locations for off-leash dog areas.

Mayor Michael Regan said the report was commissioned in July last year.

“We are always trying to balance the needs of dog owners and those of others in the community,” Mayor Regan said.

“Before we decide, it is important that we understand community views [and] do our due diligence to ensure there are no adverse impacts on our environment.”

The news follows a ruling by the Land and Environment Court last year that an off-leash dog trial on nearby Station Beach could not continue, as Council had not followed due process and conducted an Environmental Impact Study.

Council will soon place the new proposed areas on public exhibition for a month, including mapping out potential off-leash days and times.

The findings of this community feedback will then be reported back to Council.
