Manly Arts Festival
This year’s Manly Arts Festival events are divided among four categories encompassing the visual and performing arts – See, Hear, Play and Open Studios – and span art exhibitions, theatre, film, music, talks and workshops.
Here are our top five picks across each category, offering just a taste of the range of creative and cultural activities available throughout the month.
Seaforth Art Hub Celebration
Enthusiastic art lovers will be excited to hear the Seaforth Art Hub Celebration is returning for a second year, with artists, galleries, art suppliers, framers and studios all opening their doors for one night only.
The evening will begin in the upstairs carpark at ArtSmart, Ethel Street, where locals can relax and listen to live music with a drink in hand at the ‘Art Park’, taking in the night lights of the Northern Beaches.
Galleries involved include Sydney Road Gallery, Artsmart Gallery on Ethel Street, Harvey Galleries, Art & Soul Collective Gallery and Georgina Hart Gallery.

2) 24/7 Youth Film Festival
September 10 & 11
The talent of young people across the Northern Beaches is news to no one, hence it will be an exciting two days of screenings when Manly Arts Festival showcases the short films entered in this year’s 24/7 Youth Film Festival.
Filmmakers were required to work in teams to create a seven-minute film in under 24 hours, including the secret rules, locations, phrases and items.
Head along to Cinema 3 at Hoyts Warringah Mall, Brookvale between 6pm–8pm to watch the 2019 entries.
Jim Moginie’s MAG&M Music Lounge
September 20, October 4 & November 23
Jim Moginie’s name will be familiar to all as one of the founding members of local band and Australian sensation Midnight Oil. He has come onboard this year as the special guest curator of Manly Art Festival’s Music Lounge, putting together an incredible array of performances, appearances and collaborations from a variety of musicians.
Performers include Australian multi-instrumentalist Leah Flanagan, Warumpi band original member Neil Murray, Australian Chamber Orchestra violinist Satu Vänskä, and Brian Ritchie from the legendary US band Violent Femmes.

Life Drawing Studio
September 10 & September 24
Fancy yourself a bit of a budding artist or just interested in learning a new skill? Come along to Manly Art Gallery & Museum for a special life drawing studio workshop in the beautiful surrounds of the gallery. Hosted by the MAG&M Society, all are invited to bring their sketching materials and join in. Refreshments will be served at the end.
$10 members tickets and $17 non-members, 7.15pm – 9.15pm, Manly Art Gallery & Museum, West Esplanade, Manly.
5) OPEN STUDIOs
Open Studios Weekend
September 14 & September 15
Meet at Manly Wharf for a special bus tour to several private studios and art spaces of Northern Beaches premier artists. Explore ‘behind the scenes’ of the peninsula’s art world, learn about the creative process and purchase a unique artwork or two.
$10 per person, 10am – 4pm, Manly Wharf.
