Modern Indian at its best

The first thing you notice when stepping inside the unassuming door fronting busy Sydney Road is the welcoming warmth.

It takes just a few seconds to see that Bijolias is a true family restaurant – full of locals there to celebrate the big and small occasions, from the weekend catch up to dad’s 60th birthday.

It’s unsurprising that the Seaforth spot has cemented itself in the heart of Beaches locals, after 10 years of focusing on a simple but winning combination – delicious food and wonderful hospitality.

While charming host Anibha has taken a well-deserved night off on this occasion, we’re instantly met by her incredibly accommodating son, Ishaan.

He shows us to a quaint little table by the kitchen door, the perfect spot to take in the restaurant’s delightful array of intoxicating sights and smells.

After taking some time to peruse the rich menu of curries, lentils, rice, meats, and breads, my partner and I choose to start with a traditional favourite – the homemade crispy samosas.

A go-to of mine whenever I am treated to Indian cuisine, I am thrilled by the large, delicately crunchy pastries filled with aromatic potato and peas.

Ever the carnivore, my partner also elects for the pepper lamb cutlets as a starting dish.

While not something I would usually order, the lightly spiced meat is cooked to perfection and complemented brilliantly by a fine, crispy battered shell. This dish is now definitely on my radar.

Knowing the quality of head chef Virender Pal Singh’s cuisine, we decide to take the leap and order outside our usual comfort zone for the mains.

I choose the Nariyal beef – a Southern Indian specialty in a rich coconut sauce flavoured with curry leaves and mild mustard, while my partner opts for the Murg Korma – a chicken dish with a creamy, nutty fenugreek sauce and fresh coriander.

The tender beef chunks fall apart in the smooth coconut milk sauce, providing incredible texture. Meanwhile, the succulent chicken pieces are pair perfectly with the sweet, herbaceous taste of the fenugreek sauce.

Mopped up with aromatic basmati rice and soft naan, these distinct curries showed us a new side to Indian cuisine beyond our safe favourites and were testament to Bijolias masterful cooking.
