Who would have thought the finest vegan dining experience on Sydney’s North Shore would be just steps away from busy Military Road in Neutral Bay?
Green Sprouts Vegetarian is not only a place for vegans but meat eaters alike, with more than 50 different Chinese-influenced plant-based dishes – from tasty wasabi mayo ‘prawns’ to traditional salt and pepper tofu.
As a vegan, it’s not often I’m blessed with such an extensive menu of interesting and creative meals.
My partner and I started off by ordering a bottle of Asahi beer each. After a quick clink of the bottles to cheers, the following 10 minutes were spent umming and ahhing over what we should order.
We jumped in with an entrée of satay ‘chicken’ skewers, made from wheat protein and marinated in a satay sauce. Both crispy and tender, this morish starter left me and my dining partner eager for our next dish.
No sooner had we finished discussing how enticing our starter was, than our mains arrived.
I opted for the shredded ‘pork’ served with pancakes and my partner ordered the Bi Feng Tang Stir Fry ‘Chicken’ from the specials board.
The marinated stir-fried wheat protein served with handmade pancakes and cucumber sticks delivered a sweet and tangy taste, while the chicken dish was more on the spicy side, with peppers, roasted cauliflower, and a black bean sauce.
Perfectly cooked and seasoned, I think it would be difficult for any meat-eater to not be impressed with this plant-based alternative.
Just as I was about to turn down the offer of a dessert, I was enticed into having a waffle desert with a red bean sauce. No regrets here.
There are at least another 47 more dishes that I am yet to discover at Green Sprouts, meaning it has never been easier to have a plant-based night out on the North Shore.
