Bespoke Kitchen Designers, Renovation and Kitchen Remodelling Experts Covering North Shore & Northern Beaches
Top tips on kitchen design by Seabreeze Kitchens
Ask Anders Lawaetz, head kitchen designer at Seabreeze Kitchens on the Northern Beaches, and he will tell you that, when it comes to kitchens, bigger isn't necessarily better – what's more important is that the space available is designed and remodelled to its full potential, and that it’s a space you want to spend time in.
Seabreeze Kitchens on the Northern Beaches - easily accessible to Manly, Warringah, Pittwater and the North Shore - specialise in bespoke kitchen design, kitchen renovation, kitchen remodelling, kitchen storage and more.
Here, Anders shares his tips for designing a kitchen you will be happy with for years to come.
Make sure your bespoke kitchen design takes into account your future kitchen requirements
The very first thing to do is to work out what you like about your current kitchen and what would you change. Next, consider what you will be using your kitchen for. Will you be entertaining a lot, or will you be cooking for your family? How many people will be using the kitchen? Do you need a breakfast bar, a space for the TV, or a space that doubles as a home office? Answering these types of questions will determine everything from how much storage space you need to what kind of kitchen appliances to install.
Your kitchen remodel - determine your storage space requirements
The basis for a well-planned kitchen is first determining the personal storage space requirements. This depends on lifestyle, shopping behaviour and how often cooking takes place in the kitchen.
Plan in kitchen zones
Identify the individual kitchen zones. These include: consumables, non-consumables, cleaning, preparation and cooking. Specific items placed in each zone create a kitchen with efficient work flow.
Before your kitchen renovation, work out storage solutions that work for you
There are literally heaps of space-saving storage solutions that can make your kitchen much more productive. Consider having pull-out drawers as these are fast becoming a popular choice for crockery and pots, lazy Susans in corner cabinets give easy access to the otherwise hard to reach space, pull-out shelves, baskets, racks and wall rail systems are great solutions for storing those smaller kitchen items.
Make sure that enough benchtop space is designed into your kitchen
Food preparation is the overriding purpose of the kitchen, so you need to make sure you have plenty of space for it. Kitchen benchtops need to be at least 600mm wide with the recommended range being 600mm to 900mm. Benches should be 600mm long at the absolute minimum if only one person is preparing food. If two or more people are involved in food preparation, consider a benchtop with a length of 1200mm to 1500mm or more.
Make sure the hardware in your kitchen is the very best quality
A lot of the expense in a kitchen is in the doors and panels. The most popular materials used in today’s kitchens are laminate, polyurethane, vacuum formed, solid timber, timber veneer, glass and stainless steel. Popular choices for the kitchen benchtop are granite, corian, quartz, stainless steel, laminate, tile and hardwood.
The latest kitchen designs in Northern Beaches and North Sydney
According to Anders, emerging trends in kitchen design from Europe can often appear in kitchens on the North Shore and Northern Beaches down the track. Look out for benchtops with very thin front edges (around 0.5cm-1cm). Sustainability and eco-thinking for kitchen design is also in vogue right now, with people increasingly opting for water and energy-efficient devices.
For kitchen units, the key materials are still wood/wood effects and high-gloss white - although be ready to see bright flashes of colour on the insides of drawers and cupboards. Expect to see a trend towards multi-use kitchens that not only work hard to facilitate cooking and dining but are also transforming into a home office.
