Kitchen Design Northern Beaches & North Shore
Custom kitchen design tips from an experienced kitchen designer
When you're updating your kitchen, one of your most important tasks will be choosing materials that suit your kitchen design budget.
If you need to be economical with your money, a high gloss laminate kitchen will provide you with a luxury feel without the large price tag.
If you have more money to spend it's still wise to balance your budget by using expensive materials for some specific areas of your fitout, such as the bench top and splashback but go with a more affordable product for your cabinets.
What are some of the popular choices people make with their kitchen design?
Here are some tips from one of the best kitchen renovators and designers on the Northern Beaches, who can help you make smart choices for your kitchen renovation.
High gloss is a popular finish that never goes out of fashion. This is due to the design principle that shiny or reflective surfaces create an expensive feel. High gloss is a popular option for cabinet doors.
Another timeless favourite is stone benchtops. Some people call it Ceaser stone but that's the name of a brand. It's actually called Quartz stone. Stone is a very popular choice. Victoria says about 80% of the kitchens she installs have stone.
“Most homes have stone. Laminate benchtops are generally mostly used in rentals because it's cheaper."
“For the splashback the client could use the same stone that they use on the benchtop."
“It’s all dictated by budget. Tiles are so much cheaper than glass and stone. Glass and stone is very similar in price."
“The client can also have patterns in the glass. They can have a waves pattern or a bubbles pattern. They can get creative if they want to."
“But, once again, glass is more expensive."
“I only do floors in the kitchen if it's tiled. I don't go into timber laminated floors and vinyl and things like that."
“Same with window dressings, I don't usually go into those."
“However, some investment property owners live in another country or interstate and they’ll say ‘I need to have blinds'."
“So if they need me to do it, I'll get their approval and I will organise the install.”
“So if the client really needs me to organise things like that I can provide that service.
“Most of the time people are usually homeowners. So it's only the people who have rental properties generally that are living elsewhere in another country or another state and they say ‘Look, I need to get this as well can you organise this?’ Yes I can.”

After the initial visit and after the kitchen design has been accepted, the next steps are doing the schedule, ordering the cupboards and having the installers put everything in.
“I try to organise it so that the client is without the kitchen for the least amount of time possible. I don't leave them for 3 weeks to get a benchtop installed and things like that.”
The job is done as quickly as it possibly can to the timeframe.
For an average kitchen with a stone benchtop the client will be looking at probably about a week and a half to two weeks.
If the client is having a glass splashback, this will add to the install time.
The kitchen is operational in two weeks, but the splashback is not measured until everything is complete.
For a glass splashback there's anything up to three weeks wait on top.
It depends on the glass manufacturer.
“To explain it quickly, it doesn't matter which company you're using, the glass has to be toughened. And there are only two or three companies in Sydney that toughen glass. So it has to be sent to these companies. And you’re put into a queue and you’re in the queue and there's nothing anyone can do to make it quicker."
“So it's two to three weeks for a glass splashback to be installed.
“Once the kitchen is installed, the overall time frame you're looking at is 4 to 5 weeks with a glass splashback. However, you can use your kitchen. The kitchen is always operational within two weeks.”
