The Foot Group - Foot orthotics
Foot orthotics who needs them?
There are numerous reasons why an individual would need orthotics. The foot is a complex structure, comprised of 26 bones, 33 joints and over 80 muscles, tendons and ligaments. With so many working parts, your feet support, cushion and propel your body, all day, every day. It is not surprising then that at times your feet may need some assistance. Orthotics are prescribed as part of a treatment plan for either current or past musculoskeletal injury or biomechanical problems. Biomechanical problems, that is problems resulting from you body movement, increase the demand of the surrounding soft tissues and joints creating pain within the foot, ankle, lower limb, knees, hips and/or back.
Orthotics are also prescribed to assist the recovery of musculoskeletal injuries from sport.
Why we prescribe them?
The aim of orthotics is to correct dysfunctional biomechanics. In other words, orthotics help align the feet to a more neutral position, allowing your body to function at its best. By providing better support and positioning of the foot pain is alleviated and the development of foot pathologies are prevented or halted. Further, orthotics improve pelvic alignment and postural sway and reduce knee strain from minimising lower limb torsion.
How we assess the foot?
The Foot Group uses state of the art equipment to assess the foot, both while you are standing and more importantly while you are moving. Our podiatrists use a pressure sensitive treadmill and video gait analysis to determine the true nature of the problem and treat the underlying cause.
The Zebris pressure analysis treadmill and software is the latest and most comprehensive analysis system to measure and record numerous gait variables including pressure distribution underneath your foot while you walk, step lengths, foot rotations, pelvic twists and much more. The technology provides more detail which allows our podiatrists to gain a more comprehensive clinical presentation and select the correct orthotic for you.
What are orthotics made of?
Orthotics prescribed by The Foot Group are made of polypropylene plastic. They are lightweight, comfortable, durable, hygienic and can be used with or without a cushioned top cover. From a 3D laser-scan of your foot the orthotics are custom made using computer milling technology so they accurately match the contour of your foot providing optimal comfort. Consistently, our orthotics deliver outstanding results.
