Foot Mobilisation Improving Quality of Life for Decades to Come
Almost 40% of the population of Australia will suffer some sort of problem with their feet during their lifetime. Something as simple as a toenail infection can be treated with antiseptic creams and professional trimming, whereas more complex problems such as bunions are likely to require orthotics or in more severe cases surgery to relieve the symptoms. Problems in the feet can cause pain and stress in seemingly unrelated areas of the body.
To understand why so many of us suffer from foot problems, let me first explain a bit about the complex structure of the human foot.
The foot and ankle contain:
- 26 bones – one-quarter of the bones in the human body are in the feet
- 33 joints
- more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments
- a network of blood vessels, nerves, skin, and soft tissue.
The average person will walk around 128,000kms in their life time - that’s more than three times around the earth. When walking, each time your heel lifts off the ground it forces the toes to carry one half of your body weight. If your feet were a car that had done a lot of kilometres, you would pay attention to warning signs, schedule regular tune-ups and get yourself a good mechanic!!
My podiatry clinic, Alternative Foot Solutions in Manly is the only podiatry clinic in New South Wales that specialises in Foot Mobilisation Therapy. My aim is to provide a medical solution to heal your aching body without pain, expensive surgery or orthotics and therefore improving the quality of your life for years to come.
Foot Mobilisation Therapy uses a gentle and painless hands-on technique to mobilise joints and improve the alignment of the feet and body. When a joint is not fully mobile the surrounding joints take up the slack, creating extra stress all around. Poor mobility in one area can cause pain and stress in other parts of the body. When combined with corrective exercises, FMT will fix the cause of foot, heel, ankle, leg, knee, hip and back pain.
Alternative Foot Solutions provides a treatment program that has been developed over the years in consultation with my patients.
Before we begin therapy it is important for me to understand your goals and motivations. Many of my patients would like to be able to run on the beach or wear high heels. A better understanding of what you would like to achieve will ensure the correct treatment plan for you.
A gait assessment allows me to look at the way you walk and run. An abnormal walking pattern can lead to pain and inflammation in the foot as well as in other parts of the body. At this point I will also test your joints and muscles and measure the angles which may need to be realigned. In some cases we may refer on for relevant scans which further help to diagnose pathology.
When evaluating the best treatment plan for you my aim is to make it a consultative process. How long is the treatment likely to last? How often can you come for treatment?
I make a recommendation and discuss options and we map out a treatment plan after the pathology has been clearly explained.
4. The Healing Begins
It takes around 90 days for the collagen fibres in the joint to realign, however in most cases you will feel a difference in two to three weeks. We will conduct regular reviews to monitor your progress.
5. Continued Success
At the conclusion of treatment we discuss what will be helpful to keep your body at an optimum level of health, things you can do yourself and when it’s relevant to come back and see us. Generally speaking it’s a bit like the dentist, everyone should maintain healthy teeth and have regular checkups, with feet it’s the same.
If you have joint pain in your feet or legs and would like to discuss treatment options then contact me at Alternative Foot Solutions.
