Originally hailing from England, she gained her qualification as a dentist and operated her own dental practice for many years. She now leads her team of seven female dentists in Australia within her dental clinic.
The team partake in continuing professional development to keep up with latest techniques and laws. They love keeping up with everything to do with the dental industry, whether it's renewing their first aid courses together, or attending meetings regarding industry standards.

Children's Dentistry Specialists
Gateway Dental Care are specialists in family and children's dental care and will make every member of the family feel at ease about their time in the dental chair.
Do you have a toddler or young child who is anxious about visiting the dentist?
Going to the dentist can be a nerve-wracking experience, regardless of age.
When you’re introducing your child to a dentist, you want to choose a children’s dentist who knows how to make the experience child-friendly. The Gateway Dental Care team is exclusively female. Most of the dentists are mums themselves, and a few have very young children of their own. A paediatric dentist knows how to make children feel relaxed about visiting the dentist. They won’t make it too much fun with too many toys, because the child also needs to realise it’s a medical appointment.
The Gateway Dental Care team provide the right balance for your child’s dental appointments. They provide educational dental activities. Sometimes they reward the children for their co-operation with stickers or balloons. The team’s goal is to make visiting the dentist a nice experience for your child, so that they’ll feel comfortable about coming back.
Are You Having Trouble with Your Child's Dental Routine?
Dr Joanne Evans and her team of dentists can discuss your needs if you have concerns or difficulties with your child.
For example if you are having problems to brush your child’s teeth, or having trouble showing them how to do this, your dentist can help. The dentists can also discuss various aspects of your child’s health if necessary, such as their diet, sugar intake and brushing habits. The dental clinic tends to have the same children visiting every 6 months.
Are you a local parent looking for a dentist who can provide your child with regular check-ups?
Gateway Dental Care dentists show your young children how to brush their teeth properly, if they aren’t already doing that. The team at Gateway Dental Care can teach your child how to brush their teeth better, for example, if they're not reaching to the back properly, and keep them on the right path.
Children are also introduced to plaque disclosing tablets which shows the plaque that appears when they're not brushing properly, which the kids find to be a fun, interactive experience.
Gateway Dental Care like to get children active during their dental appointment rather than just having a look at their teeth. The dentist gets a sense of how the child is feeling before choosing which activities to pursue during a dental session. If the child seems okay, then the dentist might polish their teeth. They might not need a polish, but the purpose is to get the child used to a dentist working around their mouth. Also, as soon as your kids get their molars in the back, the team can fissure seal them and put some extra fluoride on.
Getting your child accustomed to being in the dental chair is helpful for the future possibility that they need something done, so that it won't be such a big deal for the child. However if you have a particularly anxious child, the dentist might tell you that it doesn't matter, let's just try to bring the child along next time you come with the other siblings or whatever the case, in the next 6 months. The dentists at Gateway Dental Care don't push the children or scare them off if they're not willing or ready to become acquainted with visiting the dentist.
Dr Joanne Evans explains that it’s also about chatting to the mum, asking about how the child is going with brushing their teeth, and reminding the parent not to give the child any sugary fizzy drinks etc. Preventative treatment is about recognising the steps you can take to protect your child’s teeth before it gets too late. By doing so, you’ll give your child the best chance of maintaining a healthy smile for many years to come.
Preventative Dentistry for Adults
Periodontal treatment refers to everything from just a simple scale and polish which is a more preventative procedure, to full periodontal surgery.
For most people, periodontal treatment is about teeth cleaning. Most people build up tartar in their mouth, behind their teeth or in between their teeth. If you leave tartar on your teeth, it can cause inflamed gums, otherwise known as gingivitis. It can progress right into the periodontium which is the tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth, under the bone. When gone untreated, you can get a whole range of unpleasant problems within your mouth including bone loss, pocketing, bleeding and bad breath.
Gateway Dental Care assess the above-mentioned dental issues during each of your regular check-ups. If there's any areas of concern, the dentist will address it and then show you how to take care of the area, to prevent future issues. The dental clinic also provides deep scale cleaning, which is a clean that goes deeper than the surface of the tooth.
Gateway Dental Care’s dental hygienist, Mary Frei, is very specialised in her field. She was also founder and past President of the NSW Dental Hygiene Association of Australia. Dr Joanne Evans says of her team’s dental hygienist “We’re very lucky to have Mary, she's absolutely fantastic”. Mary has patients who follow her everywhere. A lot of patients see her for their regular cleaning every three or four months.
While Gateway Dental Care can help with a lot of periodontal treatment scenarios, if it's a very advanced problem, they will refer the patient to a periodontal specialist, also known as a periodontist.
Emergency Dentist with Convenient Emergency Hours
You never know when a dental emergency may pop up, so it's good to know help is at hand when you need an emergency dentist in Sydney.
There are a few issues people typically come into a dental practice for at short notice. Emergency hours are often used for toothache, infection, pain and trauma. Gateway Dental Care don't overbook their schedule, so that they can cater for emergency patients throughout the day. Gateway Dental Care has 4 dental chairs across both surgeries, so emergency cases are usually able to be seen to promptly.
When you call Gateway Dental Care in an emergency such as trauma, the dental clinic will do their best to get you to the dentist straightaway. For less urgent issues such as pain, emergency patients are usually able to book an appointment on the same day. This can avoid long and unnecessary waiting times if you or your children are in pain.

How Often Should You Visit the Dentist?
Some adults like to visit the dentist every 6 months. Some only want to go once a year. Other people only want to go if there's something wrong.
Gateway Dental Care believe that prevention is better than a cure. Your dentist would like to see you preferably every 6 months and at least once a year, so that they can check your gums and spot issues before they are troubling you.
The dentist can visually see a lot of things through diagnostic x-rays which show small cavities but can also help see other things like soft tissue problems. The dentist is always looking for various issues in the mouth. These are not common, but can include periodontal disease or cancer lesions, which are important to spot early. Your dentist can help you take care of matters before they become a bigger and more expensive problem. You can also have regular cleans every year. Having checks and cleans is preventative treatment, which is much better for you.
Gateway Dental Care owner and principle dentist, Dr Joanne Evans, comments “People don’t realise - they really don't - that if they go to the dentist every year it's going to cost far less in the long run.”
“They'll also be far less anxious if they have a preventative check”.
“Leaving it until they’ve got a tooth ache and then finding out that you need another four fillings and a couple of cleans and all the rest of it…”
“It will cost far more money than if they just came for a check up and clean, and x-rays once every 2 years”.
How long has it been since you last visited the dentist for a check up?
Be sure to also keep in mind that a lot of private health funds contribute to a maximum of 2 check ups per year depending on cover, so make sure you’re making the most of it.
