Cosmetic Dentistry Can Improve Your Smile and Boost Your Confidence
The look of your smile can affect your confidence. Luckily, improving the aesthetics of your teeth doesn't necessarily have to cost a lot of money or involve complex dental surgery.
Gateway Dental Care provides a variety of cosmetic dentistry services to the patients of their Northern Beaches dental clinic. These cosmetic dentistry services include tooth whitening, veneers, crowns, bridgework, white fillings, smile makeovers and dental implants.
Dr Joanne Evans, owner and principle dentist of Gateway Dental Care shares more details about what’s involved with getting these cosmetic dentistry improvements for your smile.
Veneers & Whitening
Teeth whitening can be done in surgery in the dental chair, however the take-home kit is the most popular teeth whitening method.
There are a couple of steps involved to prepare to take home your Opalescence tooth whitening system. The dentist will take impressions of your teeth to create the right fit for your teeth and will also determine the correct dose of concentration.
It’s good to keep in mind that the stronger concentration of the treatment can only be given out by a dentist. If you purchase a tooth whitening treatment from a beauty salon, it's illegal for them to give out anything higher than a certain concentration. When you visit a dentist to purchase your kit, you will receive a proper assessment for a concentration that aligns with your level of oral health.
Some patients who have tried alternative teeth whitening solutions in the past, they say that they experience sensitivity. Opalescence is the tooth whitening product that Gateway Dental Care recommend. Opalescence contains ingredients which help maintain healthy teeth and lessen the chances of sensitivity that other solutions can cause.
If you have teeth that are chipped or worn, you might want to consider getting some porcelain veneers to cover the front of the tooth. Gateway Dental Care provide a type of veneer known as direct composite veneers. The dental veneers are made by a technician and the product that Gateway Dental Care use is a metal-free solution called IPS e.max®. This is a more natural product than others on the market which is strong and durable.
This is also the product dentists uses for crowns. When it comes to dental crowns, the team also do implant crowns which are also metal-free.
In previous times, dentists used porcelain which would eventually crack. IPS e.max® is a more advanced material. The veneers look very natural when they’re bonded onto the tooth. This product is also biocompatible with gums. The old metal products dentists used previously caused inflammation of the gums. IPS e.max® doesn't cause inflammation or allergies, so it's less of an irritant to the gums.
The team at Gateway Dental Care also use a product called Zirconia; this is a very hard ceramic that is similar to gold so it doesn't cause allergies or corrode. Dr Joanne Evans comments that a lot of dental patients don't like the idea of putting metal in their mouth. Especially in an area like the Northern Beaches, where locals are very health-conscious.
Gateway Dental Care don't use metal fillings, they use composite fillings. They also don't use metal crowns, unless requested. If so, they would use a metal with high gold content. Using precious metals as opposed to cheap metals means the dental solution is less allergenic.
Bridgework is another service provided by Gateway Dental Care.
A bridge is a type of removable denture to replace missing teeth. Implants are more popular these days, but the team also provide bridgework as some patients prefer not to go have surgery which is necessary when getting implants.
Your dentist can look at the bridgework needed and advise you on the options available to you for your particular needs. When the bridge needs to be replaced, it's recommend to use Zirconia or a precious metal bonded to porcelain.
Gateway Dental Care always use the best materials. They don't mess about with cheap alternatives, they simply use the best bonding solutions available.
The team keep up with what ranks best with the Australian Dental Association (ADA), which includes the best bonding techniques and the best materials. Using the best modern materials provides longevity of the filling and also provides an aesthetically pleasing result.
What is a smile makeover?
Just like a home makeover refers to the redesign of various aspects of your home, a smile makeover refers to various combinations of dental treatments. For example, somebody who has worn their teeth down through grinding, has old crowns, broken teeth or misshapen teeth will want the whole makeover package.
The dentist can discuss the various options with the patient and help determine what's in their budget when it comes to smile makeovers.
Crowns and Straightening Teeth
A smile makeover isn’t necessarily a big procedure, it can also be a minimal procedure. It could be a matter of having orthodontics for teeth straightening of some teeth at the front.
It may not be the full orthodontics such as braces, but just a few wires and brackets that will straighten the teeth. The dentist could then whiten the teeth and then do a couple of veneers. It could be a combination of simply whitening and a couple of crowns, or it could be whitening and veneers.
Anything that's going to improve your smile can be tailor-made to suit your budget. The team can discuss all the various options available to you.
People think that fillings are all about filling the cavity, however it can also just refer to adding composite.
Dental composite is an amazing product these days. The dentist adds composite with bonds to the corner of the tooth to change the shape of the tooth.
You can change the shape of your teeth without invasive surgery, by simply adding composite to the shape of the tooth. You might want to whiten your teeth first and then you can pick a shade that's going to match your teeth. When the composite is added you wouldn't even know it was there, because it's polished. This kind of procedure is more accessible to you than you might think, as it isn't excessively costly.
Dr Joanne Evans comments that people tend to think “If I want a smile makeover, it's going cost me far too much money. I’m going to need crowns and all the rest of it.” However this might not actually be the case. It may just be a matter of whitening your teeth, which is affordable, and then doing some composite bonding to get rid of those pointy canines or filling those little gaps that you don't like.
You'll be amazed at how much you'll love your new smile just by simply doing a few little things which can cost under $1000. You’ll also be pleased to know that some private health funds cover these procedures as well. Just because an issue isn’t decay, doesn't mean it's not covered by the health fund.
Gateway Dental Care partner with a local surgeon to provide comprehensive dental implant surgery.
You’ll visit the surgeon for the surgical side of the tooth implant procedure which is then followed by visiting the dentist for the dental implant restorative side of the procedure. For example, it could be crowns, an implant supported denture or bridges.
The surgeon places the implant and after a couple of months the dentist would then provide a removable denture or a temporary bridge, these are also known as an intermediate prosthesis. The final step is to visit the surgeon who then instructs the dentist to place the implant crown to finalise the job.
