What is an orthopaedic surgeon?

Orthopaedic surgeons specialise in disorders of the muscles and bones.

They deal with conditions such as arthritis, trauma and congenital deformities using both surgical and non-surgical means.

One of the most common problems that orthopaedic surgeons deal with is joint replacement such as hip replacement, knee replacement and shoulder replacement

Many orthopaedic surgeons carry out operations with the use of an arthroscope – a fibre-optic telescope that can be inserted into the joint such as the knee, shoulder, hip or ankle to investigate what is causing the problem. During arthroscopy the joint is systematically examined to detect and treat a range of conditions including arthritis.

At Narrabeen Sports and Exercise Medicine Centre, you will find orthopaedic surgeons who have subspecialty expertise in the following:

  • Knee surgery
  • Foot and ankle disorders
  • Shoulder and elbow surgery
  • Hip surgery

Knee Surgery

Dr Justin Roe specialises in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee.

Common knee conditions include:

  • Damage to the articular (lining) cartilage of the joint
  • Tears of the meniscus cartilage
  • Loose bodies within the knee
  • Problems with the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments
  • Problems with the synovium (lining membrane) of the knee joint
  • Problems with the patello-femoral (knee cap) joint

Dr Roe has a special interest in surgery for knee instability, malalignment and arthritis.

Foot and Ankle Disorders

Dr David Carmody has expertise in fracture management of the foot and ankle. He can provide an expert opinion on conditions affecting the foot, ankle and knee including sports injuries, arthritis, instability, malalignment and tendon and cartilage problems.

Common foot and ankle operations include:

  • Foot reconstruction
  • Ankle replacement
  • Achilles tendon repair
  • Fusion surgery to combat symptoms of arthritis
  • Reconstruction to correct bunions
  • Toe deformities

Shoulder and Elbow Surgery

Dr Matthew Sherlock has a particular interest in sports injuries, arthroscopic and joint replacement surgery of the shoulder and elbow.

Shoulder surgery may be required to treat the following conditions:

  • Arthritic shoulder
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Shoulder dislocation
  • Shoulder fractures
  • Impingement syndrome

Many common elbow complaints such as tennis elbow, golfers elbow or bursitis will not require surgery however keyhole surgery (arthroscopy) may be used to treat arthritis when other non-surgical treatments have failed.

Hip Surgery

The most common surgery of the hip is hip replacement caused by the wearing down of the hip joint that results from osteoarthritis.

Other surgery includes hip resurfacing, which replaces diseased or damaged surfaces in the hip joint with metal implants. Less bone is removed for hip resurfacing making it easier to repeat the operation or to have a total hip replacement in later years.

Hip arthroscopy may be used to investigate hip pain, removing loose bodies (fragments of bone), repairing cartilage or ligament tears or repairing joint surface damage.

Dr Bill Walter is able to provide an expert opinion to patients with hip and knee problems, from those with arthritic joints requiring straightforward replacement to patients with complex anatomical joint problems (dysplasia) and specific conditions, such as Pagets disease and avascular necrosis.
