Common Sports Injuries

Knee Injuries

The knee joint allows you to run, walk and play sport. Awkward movements, falls and collisions, sudden twists, excessive force or overuse can result in a range of injuries to the knee joint and the structures supporting it. Common knee injuries include ligament, tendon and cartilage tears, and patello-femoral pain syndrome.

Achilles Heel

A rupture to the Achilles tendon is most common in those playing soccer, football, tennis and basketball and is usually caused through a heavy landing or wear and tear. If you have ruptured your Achilles tendon you will experience intense pain just above the heel and bruising on the leg and foot.

Shoulder Injuries

Injuries to the shoulder include sprains and strains, rotator cuff tears, impingement, frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), instability, bruises and contusions. A shoulder separation is an injury to the acromioclavicular joint, also called an AC injury.

Bone Fractures

Bone fractures can occur in anyone playing contact sport and often include damage to the surrounding muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Ligament Injuries

Ligament injuries are common in athletes especially around the knee and ankle. Ligaments can be found connecting most of the bones in the body and damage can be caused when twisting or landing on a knee or ankle that is over-extended.

Back Injuries

Back injuries are very common in sport as well as through every day living. Most people who play contact sport can suffer a back injury as well as those playing tennis, cricket or golf.

Hamstring Injuries

Hamstring injuries normally happen when you over extend the muscles in the back of the leg – common in soccer players trying to reach the ball. You will know you have pulled your hamstring if you feel a pop in the thigh. Warming up properly is the best way to avoid this injury.

Sprains

Sprains are very common injuries in sport especially around the ankle, which are extremely painful and often involve ligament damage.

Treatment

With many soft tissue injuries the best treatment initially is RICE – that is, Rest the injured area, Ice to the injury every 2 hours for 20 minutes, Compression by bandage and Elevation of the injured area. All of these help to minimise swelling and to prevent further damage to the already injured tissues. Massages, physiotherapy, rest and a recovery program designed by a sports physician should see you back playing sport in as short a time as possible.
